About the Recipe
Simple fruit pie with no dairy. We make this with apples that have begun to get a little old, and it works well. It even comes out good when half of the apples are sweet apples. It's our son's favorite dessert.
Ingredients
1 unbaked pie crust
Filling
6 tart apples
1½ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup water
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
Topping
½ cup butter, margarine, or coconut fat, melted
1 cup flour
2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup quick cooking oats
2 Tbsp cinnamon
Preparation
Prepare pie crust.
Peel and core apples, and slice into wedges. Place in saucepan with sugar and water. Bring water to a boil, then turn down heat. Cook slowly until apples are tender.
Add lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg, mix well. Pour into 9-inch prepared crust.
Combine dry topping ingredients in a bowl. Add melted butter, margarine, or coconut fat, and combine with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over filling.
Bake at 300°F oven 1 hour.
Variations
For a more crust-like topping, crumble an additional half of crust recipe over the filling instead of the topping.
